George Soros the international currency speculator and philanthropist is going to donate $100 million to Human Rights Watch (HRW) over the next 10 years.
HRW has said the gift from Mr. Soros’s Open Society Foundations is the largest donation the billionaire has made to a nn-governmental organization. However it is given under the condition that HRW itself raises another $100 million.
Mr. Soros said “Human Rights Watch is one of the most effective organizations I support”. Human rights is a universal principle.”
He also said that he wanted to give the US based HRW the kind of international support it deserves. The US has lost the moral high ground during the Bush administration’s so it is important that the organization can become more effective.
Mr. Soros said that he plans to make a serious of large donations. “This is particularly due to age,” the 80 year old added. “Originally I wanted to distribute all of the money during my lifetime, but I have abandoned that plan now.”
Humans rights watch is based in New York and has a staff of almost 300 and has a presence in in nearly 90 countries.
Mr. Soros was estimated last year to have a fortune off port 13 billion$13 billion by Forbes magazine.
